Safety & Security
U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York Commander and Captain of the Port: CAPT Jonathan Andrechik

The Port of Albany's security measures encompass the entire facility, offering a safe and secure environment for Port employees, tenants, customers, and the community by following established requirements related to terminal access and vessel security for U.S. ports. Security features in place at the Port are based upon practices and protocols required under the Albany Port District Commission’s Facility, Security Plan, which was approved and implemented under the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) of 2002 and are overseen by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Port Security Team regularly conducts safety drills and partners with local, state and federal law enforcement leaders as well as port tenants and stakeholders to participate; the U.S. Coast Guard, CSX, CP Railway, City of Albany Fire and Police, the Albany County Hazmat Response Team based at the Watervliet Arsenal, and representatives from Port businesses are represented.
TWIC Policy
Anyone entering a maritime facility must have a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) or be escorted by an approved Port of Albany TWIC escort.
Possessing a TWIC does not grant automatic access to restricted area facilities. There must be a reason to be on port property and approved for access. TWIC, a program of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is administered by the Transportation Security Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard. For more information on how to apply for TWIC, go to www.tsa.gov/twic.
U.S. Coast Guard regulations allow for certain non-TWIC holders to be escorted in restricted and secure areas as long as they have a reason to be on the property and are approved for access. Persons being escorted are required to present valid government issued photo identification.
